A gathering storm

On the last day of 2019, a municipal health commission office in Wuhan, China, submits a report to the World Health Organization which documents an unusual cluster of pneumonia cases in the city’s Hubei province.

Of the 44 patients identified in the report, 11 were listed as suffering from intense headaches, fevers, and respiratory distress that produced invasive lesions on the lungs.

Medical directors at Blue Shield of California begin monitoring this emerging news.

A pneumonia of unknown origin is identified in Wuhan, China, and reported to the World Health Organization.

The CDC sounds the alarm

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announces the first case of COVID-19 in the United States.

Gene sequencing released

Health officials at the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, led by Professor Yong-Zhen Zhang at Fudan University, release the genetic sequencing of the coronavirus.

The information was published online at Virological.org, a digital hub for prepublication findings created to help public health departments around the world advance scientific research.

SARS-CoV-2 is the seventh member of the family of coronaviruses, with over 70% similarity in its genetic sequence to SARS-nCoV.

The first case of COVID-19 in California is confirmed by the Department of Public Health.

Emergency announcement

California Governor Gavin Newsom declares a state of emergency. The declaration includes provisions that allow for healthcare workers outside of California to assist at state facilities.

A cause for deepening concern

The World Health Organization officially declares COVID-19 a global pandemic. Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus publicly states that he is “deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread, the severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction.”
